Audience targeting is becoming increasingly commoditized.
Most advertising platforms give brands access to the same audience catalog. Two competing brands can select the same in-market audience, the same lifestyle segment, or build nearly identical rules-based audiences using the same available signals.
If both brands are targeting the same people in the same way, there is very little competitive advantage in the audience itself.
That is the problem we are focused on with WBX Audience Studio.
Moving Beyond the Same Audience Logic
Rules-based audiences are useful because they give advertisers a simple way to define who they want to reach.
A brand might target recent category purchasers, product detail page visitors, or shoppers who fall into a particular in-market segment.
The challenge is that those rules are easy to replicate.
If Brand A decides that recent category purchasers are valuable, Brand B can make the exact same decision. Both advertisers can end up competing for essentially the same consumers.
Audience Studio takes a different approach. Instead of starting with a targeting rule available to everyone, we start with the specific outcome a brand is trying to drive and use that brand’s own customer and performance signals to inform who should be targeted.
That creates an audience strategy that is specific to the brand, not just the platform.
ROAS Does Not Tell the Full Story
Creating a differentiated audience is only useful if it creates a differentiated outcome.
This is where traditional campaign measurement can fall short.
Metrics like ROAS, conversion rate, and cost per acquisition are important, but they do not always tell us whether advertising actually changed customer behavior.
An audience made up of people who were already highly likely to purchase can generate a great ROAS. That does not necessarily mean the targeting created incremental value.
For Audience Studio, the more important question is:
What happened because we targeted this audience that would not have happened otherwise?
That means looking beyond surface-level efficiency metrics and focusing on outcomes such as incremental sales, incremental new-to-brand customers, incremental reach, and lift versus comparable audiences or control populations.
Measuring Whether the Audience Actually Created Value
Our goal is not just to show that an audience converted.
We want to understand:
- Did it generate incremental sales?
- Did it create incremental new-to-brand customers?
- Did it reach valuable consumers the brand would not have reached otherwise?
- Did it outperform an off-the-shelf or rules-based audience on an incremental basis?
- Did the audience continue to create value as spend and reach increased?
That distinction matters.
If two audiences both produce a 4x ROAS, they may look equally effective in a standard media report. But if one audience is mostly capturing customers who were already going to buy while the other is creating net-new purchases, those audiences are delivering very different value to the business.
Building a Better Feedback Loop
Audience Studio connects audience creation, activation, and incremental measurement.
We can test a custom audience against the strategies already available to the advertiser, understand where it creates incremental value, and use those learnings to improve the next audience we build.
Over time, that creates a feedback loop that is specific to the brand.
As audience-building tools become more accessible, the ability to select or create an audience will matter less on its own.
The advantage will come from building an audience that is different from what everyone else can access, measuring whether it actually changes customer behavior, and using those results to make the next audience better.
If two brands can target the same audience, the audience is not the advantage.
The advantage is knowing who creates incremental growth for your brand and being able to prove it.
