Amazon didn’t set out to build a global ad empire. In fact, Jeff Bezos famously said, “Advertising is the price you pay for having an unremarkable product or service.”
Yet today, Amazon Ads is a $56 billion operation, growing faster than Meta and Google and redefining the entire landscape of retail media and connected TV.

What Amazon built wasn’t an ad business. It built an advantage machine. And it did it by making three systemic bets that everyone in marketing should understand now.

1. Closed-Loop Attribution Became the Breakthrough Everyone Else Missed

For years, brands accepted proxy metrics and modeled assumptions. Amazon didn’t have to.

Ads and purchases happened in the same place.

That closed loop turned out to be the most valuable currency in digital advertising. Once CMOs realized Amazon could prove the impact of spend (directly to sales), the flywheel accelerated.

This is how retail media became a global category. This is why every retailer is now chasing Amazon’s model. And it’s why WBX exists: to help brands win inside this system.

2. Search + Data + Intent Rewired Performance Marketing

Amazon resisted search ads for years. Eventually, the company realized what advertisers already knew: intent is the most valuable signal in marketing.

Once Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands hit scale, the business hit “escape velocity.” Bezos set a goal of $1 billion. Amazon blew past it and kept going.

Today, Amazon’s authenticated shopping data is its moat.
For brands shifting budgets from Meta and Google into retail media, Amazon is no longer optional. It’s the foundational platform for demand capture.

3. Streaming Became the Upper-Funnel Engine Retail Media Needed

Amazon always knew that to win full-funnel budgets, it needed video and reach.

So, it built:

  • Prime Video
  • Freevee
  • Twitch
  • Fire TV
  • Thursday Night Football
  • And now NBA rights

This isn’t coincidence. It’s architecture.

Prime Video flipping to an ad-supported default in 2024 accelerated everything. Suddenly Amazon had a scaled CTV network layered on top of retail signals, something neither Meta nor Google can match in its entirety.

Today, Amazon’s DSP reaches 90% of U.S. households through premium streaming integrations (Netflix, Disney, Roku, Disney+, etc.).
That’s how Amazon closed the gap between brand budgets and performance budgets.

4. Infrastructure Became the Final Advantage

AWS didn’t just power Amazon’s ad stack; it became the stack.

From real-time bidding infrastructure to Amazon Marketing Cloud, Amazon has moved the ad industry’s backend into its cloud environment. Faster auctions, cleaner data, lower costs. And more dependence across the ecosystem.

This isn’t just ad revenue. It’s strategic gravity.

Where It All Leads: The Triopoly Era

The old duopoly is gone. Amazon forced the shift.

  • In 2022, Amazon didn’t even break out advertising revenue.
  • By 2025, it was a $67 billion engine, projected to exceed $90B within two years.
  • And it’s now the third pillar of the internet’s media economy.

For brands, this is the new reality: Your demand, your data, and your outcomes are tied to platforms that control both attention and transaction behavior.

This is why WBX exists – to help brands navigate this ecosystem with precision, speed, and accountability. Retail media isn’t a channel anymore. It’s the operating system for modern growth.

And Amazon just showed the world what happens when you combine intent, identity, content, and infrastructure into one integrated loop.

The companies that adapt now will lead the next decade of performance.
